Professor Li Xiguang calls for a dialogue journalism at world summit

Professor Li Xiguang, President of Tsinghua International Center for Communication Studies, called for a dialogue journalism in his speech to the Global Creative Leadership Summit which was closed in New York on September 25, 2009.

Heads of state, government leaders, media leaders and scientists attended the three-day Global Creative Leadership Summit which was jointly organized by Louise Blouin Foundation and the United Nations.

Prof Li suggested that people with different cultural and ideological backgrounds should communicate without barriers through a dialogue journalism.

"Media has no privilege to abuse news and commentaries to instigate hatred, hostility, massacre and war, " Professor Li said, "press freedom in true sense is to conduct dialogue journalism with your imagined enemy. "

"Our enemy is none others than ourselves, " Li told delegates from the world. "Our enemy is our ignorance, intolerance, misunderstanding and distrust toward other people."

"Judging the political correctness by their own values, the media is creating its imagined enemy by demonizing stories, backgrounds, analyses, comments, opinions and comics," Li said, "Truly free dialogues and thoughtful idea communications cannot be achieved unless people with different opinions tolerate each other, try to seek the common grounds and live in harmony."
