The final review of the 6th Serge Dumont-Tsinghua Communications Scholarship took place at School of Journalism and Communication Tsinghua University on May 14, 2009. Concentrating on the theme "Public Diplomacy and Soft Power", five Tsinghua students made oral presentations of their essays. After a fierce competition, Bi Zijia and Tan Zongyang, the top two students, were awarded one-month internships with the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in Geneva and Bangkok respectively.
A total of 15 Tsinghua students submitted their essays for this year's scholarship, but only five succeeded in entering the final review. These five students were required to make four minutes' oral presentation of their essays in English, and another four minutes in Chinese. Then they should take questions from the judges.
The five students were able to write their essays from different perspectives of the same theme. With unique points of view and thorough analyses, their presentations enabled the judges to experience a breath of fresh air.
Bi Zijia used the example of Anti-CNN.com to study the role of Chinese public media in public diplomacy; Tan Zongyang was trying to figure out how "Mianzi" (reputation) was reflected in the public diplomacy of China and U.S.; Li Ming talked about the impact of China's image amid the financial crisis on its soft power; Lu Duobao and Xing Yu analyzed the power of public diplomacy through public health incidents and animation diplomacy in Japan.
All of them showed excellent professional skills and outstanding presentation performances, which made the judges difficult to choose who would win the internships. Finally, the judges reached a consensus, and Professor Li Xiguang, Executive Dean of Tsinghua School of Journalism and Communication, announced the result.
At the end of the final review, Mr. Serge Dumont, founder of the Serge Dumont Fund, extended his congratulations to the students who got the awards, and encouraged Tsinghua students to pay close attention to international issues and make contributions to the communications industry in the future.
