Biography

Shule Cao is a tenured professor and Ph.D. supervisor at the School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University. She earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees all from Tsinghua and was a visiting scholar at the University of Westminster in U.K. and the City University of Hong Kong. At present, she serves as Deputy Director of Chinese Literature and Art Review (Tsinghua) Base. Her main research areas include the intellectual history of media and communication, film and television communication and online audiovisual studies, game studies, and cross-cultural communication. She has won the title of National Leading Talent in the Broadcasting and Streaming Industry, and received the Nomination Award of the Hu Sheng Youth Academic Award, the Third Prize of the Outstanding Research Achievements Award of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, and several First Prizes of the Academy Award of Chinese Collegial Association for Visual Art (CCAVA), among other honors.

She is the author of several award-winning monographs, including Critique and Reconstruction: British Media and Communication Research and Its Marxist Tradition, A History of European Communication Thoughts, Watch Online: The Rise of Online Video in China, and Watching Romance: The Production, Narratives, and Consumption of Romantic Drama Series in China, and has published multiple textbooks, edited volumes, and translations. She has published more than 50 academic papers in Chinese and English and has directed or participated in over 20 national, ministerial, and commissioned research projects.

Professor Cao teaches two Tsinghua flagship courses, Introduction to Visual Communication and Research in Film and Television Communication. She has received the Tsinghua University Annual Teaching Excellence Award, the First Prize in the Tsinghua Young Teachers Teaching Competition, and the Second Prize for Outstanding Mentor of the Tsinghua Student Research Training (SRT) Program. She has supervised the Tsinghua University Excellent Doctoral Dissertation and several school-level excellent master’s theses.
